Rug Fringe Cleaning – How and Why?

Rug fringe cleaning is not a favoured topic of your average carpet cleaner. The work involved is often time-consuming and difficult. Onsite or mobile rug cleaning services cannot do the job properly. In our opinion, the work needs to be done offsite where greater attention to detail can be applied.

What is a Rug Fringe?

The rug fringe refers to the tassels at the end of a rug. In handwoven rugs, the fringes are the ends of the skeleton of the rug. The fringe fibre material is usually cotton. For the purpose of this article, we are referring to more expensive handwoven rugs. The bulk of precision tassel cleaning concentrates on fringes that are still in good condition.

In some cases the fringes have been damaged by bleaching, have unravelled and/or been subjected to abrasive high traffic. Customers may decide against cleaning and follow the following options:

Folding the tassels under the rug
Cutting the fringes shorter
Replacing the old fringe with a new edge
Placing a binding material over the rug

What Does Our Fringe Cleaning Service Entail?

As mentioned previously, the rugs are cleaned at New Farm in Brisbane at our dedicated rug cleaning facility. Our technicians will attend your home, inspect your rugs, and confirm the cost involved in the restoration process.

The rugs and tassels are vacuumed, dusted, and prepared for cleaning. Fringes are combed to separate the strands. White towels are placed underneath the fringes. Natural, Erazor, and Chem-Dry Spot Remover are used to spray the fibres. After a period of dwell time, the tassels are agitated and combed again. This is followed by towel cleaning and further agitation.

The rug fringe cleaning process is then completed by hot water extraction. The rug is then turned and the back of the fringes undergo the same process. The final step is to ensure the fringes are dried with airmovers to avoid browning.

Once the fringes are dry, our technicians will inspect the fringes again and may repeat the whole process a second time. We take great pride in our attention to detail and none so more when it comes to rug fringe restoration.
